ARCHMERE ACADEMY STUDENT LIFE CENTER
Archmere Academy’s Student Life Center, in Claymont, Delaware, is a 16,500 square foot facility that houses student services, administrative staff, a full service kitchen, and over 5000 square feet of dining/meeting space. The facility serves high school students grades nine through twelve.
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is provided by variable air volume packaged rooftop air handlers. Cooling is provided by direct expansion refrigerant and heating is provided by natural gas in the rooftop units, electric heating in the variable air volume boxes, and electric baseboard. The installed cooling capacity is 90 tons. The rooftop unit serving the assembly space includes a total energy recovery wheel, which reduced the cooling capacity required for the space by 27 tons. The wheel reduced the heating for the space by 662 MBH. CO2 control of outside air is also employed for the assembly space air handler to further reduce the operating cost of this unit. The HVAC system features a “web-based” electronic direct digital control/building automation system that allows user access through any PC with the proper authorization.

Paragon Engineering designed the MEP systems of a new 40,000 square foot Emergency Operations Center in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The MEP systems included redundant HVAC systems to serve the Operations Command Center, Data Center, UPS Room, Radio Room and critical support areas. Redundancy was also provided in the chiller system water pumps, boilers, electrical stand-by power, uninterruptible power supplies and telecommunications service. The facility is designed to be self-sustainable for seven days with domestic water tanks, fire protection water tanks, diesel fuel tanks, etc. Paragon’s involvement also included design of the communications, security and information technology components as well.

Paragon Engineering has begun design development for the complete mechanical and electrical engineering design and construction administration services for a new 120,000 sq. ft. Educational School for the Deaf and a new 18,000 sq. ft. Student Residence Hall (Dormitory) in Newark, Delaware. The new education building will include a 500 seat Auditorium. HVAC systems will include new roof-top penthouse mounted air handling units with chilled water cooling coils and hot water heating coils. Similar penthouse mounted A/H units are to be dedicated to provide the outside air requirements throughout the school building. ADA toilet rooms are strategically located in the classrooms and throughout the building. Complete Science Laboratory classrooms and Prep Rooms with cold and hot water service, compressed air and natural gas outlets are to be provided at each grade level. A new primary electrical service, pad-mounted transformer, secondary electrical feeders and electrical distribution system will be provided to handle the HVAC, miscellaneous power, lighting and receptacle loads. New direct/indirect fluorescent linear lighting is provided in the classrooms to provide uniform lighting distribution and reduce glare. Energy efficient parabolic louver fluorescent troffer lighting fixtures are provided throughout the remainder of the school building. All new special systems will be provided including Telephone/Data wiring, Addressable Fire Detection and Alarm system, cable television distribution system, central clock and public address system and perimeter security consisting of card readers and closed circuit security cameras.

DELAWARE CORPORATE CENTER BUILDING 1
This project included various phases of work. First the building HVAC infrastructure was upgraded and replaced with a variable air volume system. The work included new roof top units and variable air volume boxes with electric heating coils. The electrical service and distribution system was upgraded and its capacity increased to support the new mechanical system. As part of this project, changes were made to the existing space fitout on the third floor. The first and second floors were fitted out to meet the needs of new clients. The fitout included mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection. The architectural work for the fitout was provided by various architects.

TATNALL SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Paragon Engineering Corporation provided complete mechanical and electrical engineering design and construction administration services for the project as a consultant to the Architect. Design of HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and electrical systems was included. The new 23,420 square-foot performing arts facility will include a 470-seat theater and will be constructed adjacent to the Beekley Library. The Operations Department and maintenance garages have been relocated to a new building on the southeast side of campus behind the running track. The HVAC system is an energy conscious system that uses variable air volume, refrigerant hot gas reheat, and CO2 control to maintain comfort conditions in theater space. The design also employs noise and vibration control methods to assure quiet in the auditorium. Excess existing capacity from the school’s hot water heating plant was used to heat the building.
