Cape Henlopen Medical Office Building

Paragon Engineering Corporation provide design for two separate multi-tenant medical office building. The design included design of the shell and core heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and fitout of the building based on the actual planned usage of the tenants. Two VRF heat pumps were installed on the roof of each building, 88 tons of capacity for the Enterprise MOB and 80 tons of capacity for the Cape Henlopen MOB. The occupied space was conditioned using both ceiling cassette air handlers and concealed ducted air handlers. Refrigerant piping was designed between the heat pumps and air handlers.

Dedicated outside air units were used to provide fresh air to the occupied space. In rooms with ceiling cassettes the air was supply directly to the room at a natural temperature not to upset the comfort of the space. For spaces that were conditioned using concealed units the fresh air was connected to the return of the air handlers.

The VRF systems provide highly efficient, flexible heating, ventilation and air conditioning for the building.

MRI Suite – The fitout of each building included the fitout of an MRI suite. The suites were about 3,000 square feet. All the space except for the MRI equipment room was served by the house VRF system. Because of the high equipment load a separate 10-ton, cooling only VRF system was designed for the MRI equipment room.

The MRI suite presented some special challenges that were met by the design team. The MRI equipment had a remote air-cooled chiller that had to be located outdoors and interconnected with the MRI equipment. All materials in the MRI Room below the RF Screen had to be non-ferrous materials. Additionally, the cryogen emergency relief had to be designed to relieve safety outdoors to meet the manufacturer’s back-pressure restraints.
